Ivana Marić: Fairy Tales by Which Politicians Put Citizens to Sleep

07.12.2021.

Do you remember all the fairy tales with which the ‘protectors of the people’ put their peoples to sleep and made them obedient citizens? Do you remember all those imaginary problems, which they never solved and the announced conflicts, which never happened, and which served them well to make the citizens forget about the real problems they are struggling with every day? What kind of citizens would they be, who, in addition to the alleged threat of conflicts, war and attacks of other two nations, would worry about not having a job, not being able to feed a family, not having insurance, sending children abroad, dealing with day by day growing prices, decreasing salaries, a catastrophic health care system which is killing people, politicians who are stealing millions…? National leaders are not naive to threaten the mafia structure they have established and all the jobs in which they, their children and partners have got their fingers involved. As long as they have followers like this, they don’t have to worry that someone will ask them where they got so many millions from. It is only important that they coordinate imaginary conflicts with the leaders of the other two nations, and that when one threat is exhausted, they immediately switch to another.

Where Did the War Go?

Where did the war they were announcing go? Is it over yet? Who won? Do you know what? How is it possible that one day we are on the verge of the outbreak of war, without anyone mentioning it the next day? What happened? Don’t we hate each other now? Are other people no longer a threat to us? Or have national leaders found some other topic that scares people and drives them into national pens? The problem arose when, in addition to the mad and frightened people, the world’s powers came upon their imaginary threats of war. It is unbelievable that there are still diplomats who take bh. politicians seriously. After all the corruption scandals in which they have been involved, all unfulfilled promises and unfulfilled reforms. As they suffered criticism from all sides for calling for war, they had to stop the story and come up with something new. Instead of threatening with war, Dodik and Covic are now threatening to boycott the elections. It was similar before the 2018 elections. So, until October 2022, we will hear threats of a boycott of the elections, so we will not notice again that they have done nothing to develop the economy, improve health and education, attract investments and create new jobs.

Something for Everyone

There were all kinds of fairy tales, stories, threats and promises. They promised the Serbs a referendum on independence, and they won a referendum on the holiday. In the end, they annulled the results of even that referendum. It is important that Dodik can say that he conducted the referendum, and people will already forget what the referendum was about. Admittedly, they gained the independence of RS, but within BiH, as Dodik explained it nicely!?! Dodik promised them the army as well as the return of the competencies that he and his staff transferred to the state. They invited Serbs employed in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Institutions to leave their jobs and join the boycott of politicians. They forgot that these people, unlike politicians, live on their salaries and that they do not have lucrative private businesses and millions in savings, from which they would live for the few months or years during which the boycott lasts. What the Serbs got was misery and mass emigration.

They promised the Croats a third entity, so when they saw that it was not going well, they promised them a third constituency, but they did not get it either. Then they promised them that they would elect their own representatives in power, although this refers only to the election of a member of the Presidency of BiH, because the HDZ BiH does not mind that Croats in RS are elected by Serbs. They were promised new jobs and better living conditions but forgot to mention that those jobs are abroad and that they will live better, but in a different country. What the Croats got was misery and mass emigration.

Bosniaks were promised 100% of BiH. They were promised the abolition of the RS, changes to the Constitution and the election law. They promised to abolish the name Republika Srpska. They promised to return to their homes, especially in the RS, while working to ensure that no one returned because they were more useful to them as voters in the Federation of BiH and as voters and donors in countries around the world, where they escaped from war. In recent days, we have been witnessing a diplomatic offensive by Bosniak politicians in the diaspora to convince them why it is good to support them in the elections with both votes and money. What Bosniaks got was misery and mass emigration.

Bosnians and Herzegovinians are not important to anyone, no one mentions them anymore. This should not be surprising, because the number of those for whom the state is more important than the people has been reduced to a statistical error.

Where Is the Final Straw

In the breaks between the heating up of national tensions, politicians are given some concrete promise, such as the one about a hundred thousand new jobs, and even a million new jobs. They also knew how to promise a minimum salary of BAM 700, higher pensions, a better health care system, and a more modern education. They told us that they would build highways from the increase in fuel excise taxes. Admittedly, they assure us that highways are being built, but we don’t see them. Probably the same problem with all the other promises. They kept it all but the problem is when we try to see it with our own eyes, instead of blindly believing them.

We did not rebel when they bought low-quality respirators for 10 million. We do not complain that our prime minister and deputy are more in the courts than at work. We do not mind that the children of politicians get jobs in the civil service, nor that their private companies win all the tenders they apply for. We do not mind that the director of the clinical centre has a dubious diploma, nor that the director of the Intelligence and Security Agency has one too. We don’t mind that the judiciary is under political control, so all politicians are innocent even when they steal millions, and citizens go to prison for a few metres of stolen wood. We don’t mind having the highest coronavirus mortality rate, we don’t mind paying for health insurance and being treated privately, we don’t mind even when a disastrous health care system kills people and even children.

What needs to happen for the citizens to wake up from their slumber? What can make them rebel and start thinking for themselves? To see the misery around them, instead of believing the stories of politicians about prosperity and economic progress? How many more affairs will he wave his hand at? How much more can we take, and where is the final straw? The problem is that the citizens do not protest and do not fight for themselves and for what they would benefit from and live easier, but they are ready to grab each other by the neck, with equally attacked people from other nations, about problems and topics that neither they, nor the others have no idea how to solve them, and live more comfortably. Just like in stories of constitutional change.

We are glad to see that the citizens of Serbia have rebelled against the government and their harmful decisions and poor governance. Isn’t it high time that we also show a little civil disobedience and replace corrupt and false protectors of the people in the elections, and instead elect some new politicians who will implement real reforms, and not the imaginary ones we don’t see?
